Lipscomb Univ. Men's Basketball

Bison basketball head coach Scott Sanderson begins his second season at the helm of the Bisons program. Last season Sanderson arrived to campus to find a program in turmoil. With only seven returning players from the previous season, Sanderson went to work recruiting. He brought in a wealth of talent and then molded the players into a team. The Bisons won their first 16 games and finished the season with a 34-4 record, a number two final national NAIA ranking, and an appearance in the Elite Eight in the NAIA National Tournament. Sanderson came to Lipscomb University following three highly successful seasons at the University of Mobile and has a wealth of other coaching experience, much at the NCAA Division I level. Sanderson, 38, compiled an overall record of 84-25 at Mobile, where his Rams won a school-record 34 games in 1998-99 and advanced to the championship game of the NAIA National Tournament. For his efforts, Sanderson was named the 1999 NAIA National Coach of the Year and the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year. The Rams won the GCAC championship, after finishing second in Sanderson's first year as head coach (after being picked in preseason balloting to finish sixth) and sharing the title his second year. From 1990-96, Sanderson served as assistant basketball coach at the University of Colorado, where he was involved in on-the-floor coaching, recruiting, conditioning, scouting, scheduling, and had full responsibility for coordinating and directing Colorado's summer basketball camp. From 1988-90, he served as assistant coach to Tim Floyd, now head coach of the Chicago Bulls, at the University of New Orleans. Sanderson was involved with on-the-floor coaching and preparing scouting reports on future opponents, assisted with on-campus recruiting and directed the summer camp. Sanderson was credited with developing NBA player Ervin Johnson, and UNO won two conference championships during his time there. Sanderson served as graduate assistant on the staff of coach Terry Holland at the University of Virginia in 1987-88. He worked closely with the perimeter players and was the head coach of the Cavaliers junior varsity team. He also served as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, the University of South Carolina. His first full-time job in coaching was as an assistant to his older brother Jim at Faulkner University in Montgomery, Alabama. He spent two seasons at Faulkner and was instrumental in turning a 1-27 team into a 17-10 team his first year. As a player, Sanderson lettered four years as a guard at the University of South Carolina. During his playing career he played in the NIT once, was selected team captain and led the team in free-throw percentage his senior season. He earned his bachelor's degree in business administration from USC in 1984. Sanderson comes from a family that is rich in basketball tradition. His father, Wimp Sanderson, was head coach at the University of Alabama for 12 seasons and head coach at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock for five years. He has two brothers in college coaching: Jim is head coach at Faulkner University and Barry is an assistant coach at Wake Forest. Sanderson is married to the former Ronda Honaker. They have four sons: Carter, Clint, Garrett and Grant.
