2012 Antiques Auction is Feb. 12

The Hebrew Congregation of St. Thomas will hold its 13th annual Antiques, Art and Collectibles Auction at noon Sunday, February 12, 2012, at the MCM Center at Antilles School.
This major event is our historic Congregation's only fund-raiser each year. Proceeds help us maintain our 178-year-old Synagogue, a National Historic Landmark. Our Synagogue is the oldest in continuous use under the American flag and the second-oldest in the Western Hemisphere, behind Curacao.
Proxy bidding is available. Shipping can be arranged for those who can’t be there. Call the Synagogue at 340-774-4312 for details or email
This year’s live auction will again have about 40 items -- fine West Indian antique furniture, marvelous getaways, original art by artists ranging from Camille Pissarro to Shansi Miller, and fun packages (wine tastings, an East Indian dinner for 10 and....stay tuned). The auction will start at noon and end by 3 p.m.
The expanded silent auction will include about 300 items: West Indian antiques, new and vintage furniture, fabulous jewelry, original art, old photographs, stamps, cases of wine and champagne, weekend getaways, gift certificates from shops, spas and restaurants, and much more. Silent auction tables open at 11 a.m. and close between 1 and 3:15 p.m.
Pre-auction previews of all auction items will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Sunday, February 12.
Sale tables open at 10 a.m. Sunday and feature jewelry hand-picked by Lee Monaco, former owner of an antique jewelry store on St. Thomas, and by Karen Warhol, former owner of Name Dropper who has found the latest in France, Italy and New York. Sale tables also offer the usual array of tchotchkes -- china, crystal, vases, baskets, frames, etc. -- as well as new and gently used clothing, belts, purses and scarves in our flea market tent.
Special sale tables will feature old St. Thomas photos by Ray Miles, beautiful wood pieces by master wood turner Avelino Samuel of St. John, and glass beads created by Timisa Cree of St. Thomas. As an added bonus, we're again offering designer ties from Dudley, Feuerzeig and Zebedee!
Bruce Wilson of St. Croix is again the auctioneer. Admission is $10 and includes the auction catalogue.
Food and wine will be available from the famed Chef Damaris. The Synagogue's "Top Chef" baker, Iris Horwitz, will have cookies and other goodies available for sale too.
Stay tuned for a list of this year's wonderful sponsors. We thank them from the bottom of our hearts.
We invite you to visit our beautiful Synagogue on Crystal Gade in downtown St. Thomas. Approximately 10,000 tourists visit the Synagogue each year, and the 215-year-old Congregation has long played an active and vibrant role in our community, sponsoring concerts, art exhibits, interfaith activities, food drives and other events.
