Great music, great setting, great spirit, great fun! That sums up the first annual Jazz Jam sponsored by the Hebrew Congregation on Saturday night, May 30, at Coral World.
More than 150 people turned up to hear music under the stars and enjoy a casual evening with friends -- including some they hadn't seen in ages!
The man behind the music was keyboardist Harvey Werbel, who gathered the musicians and took care of all the musical details. His ensemble featured Dale Harrigan on trumpet, Joe Ramsay on sax, Rhett Simmonds on bass, percussionist Louis Isaac, Eddie Bruce on electric guitar and vocalist Marty Beech. Steve Simon was a welcome guest artist, and others jumped in to perform throughout the evening.
The evening brought out a great cross-section of the community, many of whom voiced delight that the Synagogue had opened up the evening of jazz to the public.
The organizing force behind the event was Carol Moore, who took charge of everything from posters, publicity and the cash bar to reminding Synagogue members to bring plenty of hors d'oeuvres for our guests to enjoy.
Many thanks to all the volunteers who pitched in to help, and to all who came to support the Synagogue's musical venture. Thanks too to Marty Beech for donating proceeds from the sale of his CD to the Synagogue. It was a great evening!
