Getting a certified copy of your license

When you picked up your marriage license from the Territorial Court, you received three copies. Once signed by the witnesses, the original is returned to the Court by the officiant, on copy is kept by the officiant, and you were given the third copy. The license should work in most cases to prove you are married, and for the bride to change her last name, if she so desires. In some instances, a certified copy will be needed. This will be necessary should you need to make changes to federal government documents such as a passport or social security card.

To get certified copies, write to:
     Clerk of the Court
Territorial Court of the Virgin Islands
Division of St. Thomas and St. John
     PO Box 70
     St. Thomas, USVI 00804

The cost is $2.00 for each copy you need, and should be paid by certified check or money order, made out to the Territorial Court of the Virgin Islands. Please do not send cash.

The court will need your license number, name, and wedding date, but it will speed things up if you make a photocopy of your license and certificate of marriage and send it along with your letter. You should also enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope.

Should you need it, the phone number for the court is (340) 774-6680.
