Foundation Finds Home for VIPD
When news surfaced that the V.I. Police Department was leaving Christiansted, the Saint Croix Foundation immediately intervened. With vacant property in Sunday Market Square, we offered the VIPD a small, yet adequate, space that could accommodate the bike patrol and a few officers. In doing so, much-needed security would be restored to downtown Christiansted.
Once the VIPD accepted the offer, we immediately went to work, seeking funds for the renovation of the space located at 35 King Street. Peter Ross, President of the St. Croix Hotel and Tourism Association, launched the fundraising effort and successfully garnered enough cash and in-kind donations to get things moving. The space required new electrical wiring, plumbing, masonry work, new floors, a holding cell, counter and bike rack.
Mid-way through the renovation, it became clear that more cash and/or in-kind donations were needed to finish the job. Roger Dewey hit the phone lines and secured commitments from contractors to donate labor costs as the general contractor for the job. Other Christiansted merchants and concerned citizens flooded the Foundation's office with donations of varied amounts, making this project a true community effort!
Residents and particularly Christiansted business know of the dire importance to have a consistent police presence in town. News of the Department's departure left many feeling frustrated and confused. The Saint Croix Foundation hopes this effort has restored confidence and safety in the St. Croix community.
