VISTA members sharpen their communication skills
|
For over thirty years, AmeriCorps*VISTA members have served in disadvantaged communities, helping residents become more self-sufficient. The program is dedicated to increasing the capability of people to improve the conditions of their own lives through employment training, literacy programs, housing assistance, health education, and neighborhood revitalization. Members of AmeriCorps*VISTA work full-time and live in the communities they serve, creating programs that can continue after they complete their service.
Part of the AmeriCorps national network of service programs, AmeriCorps*VISTA has been meeting the needs of under served communities since 1965. Over the years, more than 100,000 committed individuals have joined forces with 12,000 local sponsors- public agencies and nonprofit groups- to strengthen communities across the nation.
This year, the Saint Croix Foundation coordinated training for six AmeriCorps*VISTA members whose focus lies in the area of literacy. The first training session, held in July, focused on enhancing communication conflict resolution skills. Additional sessions, to be held later in the year, will provide mediation and CPR training for the members.
Two members will be stationed at the Florence Williams Library in Christiansted, two at the Boys & Girls Club, and two with Catholic Charities (one on St. Croix and St. Thomas). The St. Croix member of Catholic Charities will conduct a needs assessment and resource manual for squatters who live in Estate Fredensberg. |
