There are several ways to explore El
Yunque National Forest. It will depend on
the effort level of selected trail and purpose of your hike that you should consider hiking on your own or with a local Guide.
Our personalized hikes in the rain forest are divided in five categories or effort levels. Is through the North entrance that you will find most of the attractions of the Forest, henceforth, the most visited and crowded ones. You will find trails with a low-impact to an strenuous effort.

Catholic Heritage of the Old San Juan - Through this walking tour you will learn the history of Puerto Rico through another perspective: the establishment of the Catholic Church in Puerto Rico and the New World.
Some churches are in the restoration process, we will not go inside; instead, we will explain the most relevant aspects of the site from the outside.
Ruta Ballajá - This unique walk explores the North side of the old city through its architecture, cemetery, and fortifications.
Defense System of the Old San Juan - Learn the stories behind the walls of the castles and wall system itself.
Artisan's Route - Learn more about our culture through our artisan´s work. Our route includes a stop at the National Gallery.

Birding with a Purpose at Hacienda Buena Vista, Ponce
Every Saturday at 8:00 am.
Your eyes and ears will be your best guides during this bird-watching tour at Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve, where you will learn to identify species of birds found in the area by paying attention to their distinctive songs and plumage. Saturdays at 8:00am by reservation only.
This is a level 1 hike.

Birding with a Purpose in Old San Juan
Ramón Power and Giralt House
Every Saturday at 8:00 am.
Bird-watching is not only a fun pastime, it is also an important scientific tool that helps determine the ecological health of a particular area. The Conservation Trust of Puerto Rico’s Birding with a Purpose tour invites you to become a citizen scientist and walk the streets of Old San Juan while observing, identifying and registering the different species of birds that inhabit the city. Second and fourth Saturday of each month at 8:00am.

Coastal Trail at Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve, Fajardo
Every Sunday at 8:00 am.
Enjoy a walk through the coast at Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve, enjoying the beautiful scenery as you learn about the hidden treasures that the area holds, as well as the fascinating organisms that it shelters. Sundays at 8:00am.

Dry Forest Trail at Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve
Every Wednesday at 8:30am; Thursday at 8:30am; Friday at 8:30am.
Take a stroll through the coastal dry forest of Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve, where you will get acquainted with the most important aspects of the flora and fauna that inhabit this type of forest and its transition to the mangrove. You will also learn about the historical trajectory of land use in the area and how this influenced the development of the forest, as well as the geological processes that led to the formation of the area comprised in this Nature Reserve. Wednesdays through Fridays at 8:30am.

Forest Trail at Hacienda Buena Vista, Ponce
Every Wednesday at 8:30am; Thursday at 8:30am; Friday at 8:30am; Saturday at 8:30 am; Sunday at 8:30am.
Hike through the soothing natural landscape surrounding the Canas River, in the heart of the subtropical humid forest of the Hacienda Buena Vista in Ponce. During this tour, you will trail through the forest as you explore different aspects of the flora and fauna that inhabit the area, and visit the shade-grown coffee plantation and other crops that grow there. Short trail tour (2 hours): Wednesdays through Sundays, 8:30am-10:30am.
This is a moderate hike.

Historical Site Trail at the Hacienda La Esperanza, Manatí
Follow the historical trajectory of Hacienda La Esperanza Nature Reserve in Manatí, one of Puerto Rico’s most prosperous sugar plantations during the 19th Century, where the main driving force behind sugar production was slavery. During this tour, you will visit the different structures that make up La Esperanza’s Historical Site, including the Sugar Mill and its unique 1861 West Point Foundry steam engine.

History and Nature of Hacienda Buena Vista
Every Wednesday at 8:30 am, 10:30 am, 1:30 pm and 3:30 pm; Thursday at 8:30 am, 10:30 am, 1:30 pm and 3:30 pm; Friday at 8:30 am, 10:30 am, 1:30 pm and 3:30 pm; Saturday at 08:30 am, 10:30 am, 1:30 pm and 3:30 pm; Sunday at 8:30 am, 10:30 am, 1:30 pm and 3:30 pm.
Travel to the 19th Century during this tour through the Hacienda Buena Vista in Ponce, where you will learn about the area’s historical, cultural and ecological value. You will visit the property’s Historical Site, including the Vives family house, the corn mill and the powerful coffee depulper, as well as the immediate natural surroundings, including part of the subtropical humid forest and the Canas River. English tours are available at 1:30pm.

History and Nature of Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve
Every Wednesday at 9:30am, 10:00 am, 10:30 am and 2:00pm; Thursday at 9:30am, 10:00am, 10:30am and 2:00pm; Friday at 9:30am, 10:00am, 10:30am and 2:00pm; Saturday at 9:30am, 10:00am, 10:30am and 2:00pm; Sunday at 9:30am, 10:00am, 10:30am and 2:00pm.
Explore the historical background of Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve and learn about the different ecological systems that inhabit the area. You will walk along the mangrove boardwalk that borders Laguna Grande and visit Playa Lirios, where you will witness the dynamic rocky coast and the promontories that give the Reserve its name.
Finally, you will visit the famous Faro de Fajardo, where you will learn about the Lighthouse’s history and enjoy the different exhibits, and maybe even catch a clear glimpse of the islands and keys that extend off the coast of Fajardo, such as Vieques, Culebra, Saint Thomas and Tortola. Wednesdays through Sundays at 9:30am, 10:00am, 10:30am, 2:00pm.

Night Tour of Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve
Every Thursday at 7:00pm; Friday at 7:00pm; Saturday at 7:00pm.
Share the secrets of the night at Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve. During this moonlit tour, you will see firsthand the nighttime operation of the Lighthouse and experience the phenomenon of bioluminescence, as you observe the majestic Laguna Grande and learn about its valuable role and the importance of conserving this ecosystem. Thursdays through Saturdays, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm, by reservation only.
