Trinidad & Tobago - Alexia of the Universe

If Alexia Charlerie was stuck on a deserted island, she would prefer to have a minister of religion by her side than a parent or a pet.

This was her response to the final round question in Sunday night's Miss Trinidad and Tobago/Universe 2001 show, held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Wrightson Road.

Charlerie said her spirituality and relationship with God are most important to her and after her life is over and she has accomplished all she can, she wants to make sure she is at peace with her Creator.

It was this answer that earned Charlerie, aka Miss Hott 93.5FM, the title of Miss T&T/Universe 2001, a title that seemed to slip through her fingers after the first round of questioning.

A clearly confused Charlerie botched her question - How would T&T being named a Caribbean state affect its global impact?.

But, in a surprise move on the part of the judges who usually select three contestants for the final round, Charlerie was named as one of four girls to move on.

This was the second time that an "extra" contestant was added to the beauty queen line-up. In the first elimination round where judges usually select six contestants to move forward to the semifinal round, Saturday's seven adjudicators, led by Christine Jackson-Hart, named seven girls.

Charlerie was one of 12 contestants who competed for the coveted Miss T&T title, won last year by Heidi Rostant.

Rostant, who participated in May's Miss Universe pageant in Cyprus, took her final walk on Saturday night and handed over her crown and sash to the new queen.

First and second runners-up in last year's local show, Sharri Byron and Franziska Matthews respectively, also took their final walks on the Crowne Plaza stage. In April, Byron represented T&T at the Miss Inter-Continental competition in Germany, bringing home the "Miss Friendship" title. Matthews leaves the island on November 27 to participate in the Top Model of the World contest, to be held in Germany.
