Never a summer like mine.
by Carolin G. Romney

     Never a summer like mine.

Awakened by the sweet songs of birds
Whistling tunes I have never heard
Sweet so sweet to my precious ears
A special melody each one bears
A day filled with sheer excitement
I hastened to finish my home assignment
To catch up with Bugs Bunny and Scooby-Doo
A little bit of Ninja Turtles too

Then off to Rocky Willow by half past eleven
With my Daddy's (Uncle Joe's) morsel
A chance to assist in the store was always my pleasure
Especially collecting tips of good measure

We bike-raced to pick sea shells at the Sand Dredge
Playfully skipping along the water's edge
     > On our way back we checked our 'killiban' traps Before retreating for deserving 'cat naps'

The seaplane with its roaring engine
Though it jolted me awake was very exciting
I dropped teddy bear and baby doll
Just viewing this 'beauty' was my all in all

Fruits sweet and succulent from Mommy's garden
With Daddy's magic touch melon vines grew Laden
Picking sugar apples and dodging honeybees
Oh what fun we had climbing guava trees

And occasional pines here and there
Even sugar canes thrived though sometimes rare
I loved picking peas, okras, peppers and corn
'Twas for these the parrot traded a jolly "Good morn"
Hours and hours spent at the seashore
Swimming, diving, fishing and lots more
Gingerly we picked whelks and avoided the eel's wish
Occasionally slapping each other with jelly fish

Soon we returned home to a somewhat angry Mother
Not to worry, we quickly soothed her right over
With buckets of sea grapes, whelks and fish
Oh how she loved these on a savory dish
As summer slowly came to a quiet close I was parched like a peanut with a sunburned nose
Cuts and bruises were minor details As stories of my summer were no fairy tales.
But I did it all over every summer time
'Cause there was never a summer quite like mine
