     Bregado Flax Educational Centre Secondary Division held its first ever Mathematics Competition. Dubbed Math Madness, the first and second rounds were held at the school on the afternoon of June 5, 2002. Some thirty six (36) students took part round one which was the sprint round. Round two was the team round. Each of the six teams, representing the three houses, Rhymer, Harrigan, and O'Neal were comprised of five members, one from each form.
     The final round took place at the Catholic Community Centre. From the original (36) students ten (10) finalists were selected. With tension mounting the top ten finalists took their places and an unforgettable evening began. The ten (10) finalists were Kishelle Blaize, Atricia Pereira, Tafana Caesar, Rachel D'Abreau, Chayne DeFreitas, Kyle Harrigan, Angela Penn, Thomason Belmar, Renata Gerald and Rea Vanterpool.
      When seventh place competitor Chayne DeFreitas entered the competition tension mounted as he quietly and quickly made short work of dismissing his competitors. Finally He was faced with the number one competitor Rachel D'Abreau. Both competitors seesawed back and forth. With the score tied two (2) each Rachel hit the bell a split second before Chayne to become the grand champion.
      The thick audience of parents, teachers, students, and other community members applauded both competitors. It was a well fought match.
     Questions for the competition came from Algebra, Geometry, and Consumer Arithmetic.

     All participants received Tee- Shirts and the top ten students received TI-83 graphing calculators along with many other prizes. We hope to make this an annual event. The event was coordinated by Math teacher Doug Bradley.
